Railway doubling between Messina-Catania begins with work in Sciglio tunnel: mole in action

The works to enhance and modernize the railway line Palermo-Catania-Messina are ongoing. The focus is now on the future Sciglio tunnel, a nine-kilometer tunnel which is the longest in the Giampilieri-Taormina section. The project is being carried out by a consortium led by Webuild (with a 30% stake from Pizzarotti). A total of 5 TBMs will be used on the 2 sections of the line, with Webuild constructing 11 tunnels and 9 viaducts along the 43km route, digging a total of 65km. Recent joint inspections by Rfi and Italferr, companies of the Infrastructure Division of the FS Group, ensure the progress of the works in Sicily. From the activation of the Igea tunnel boring machine for the Sciglio tunnel to the construction of the viaduct over the Simeto river, the efforts aim to develop a more sustainable and efficient infrastructure. Overall, the interventions guarantee compliance with interoperability requirements and faster travel times on the Messina – Catania – Palermo route.

The new infrastructure will allow for a revision of the service model, aiming to speed up connections between the main Sicilian cities. The new link between Messina and Catania will reduce travel times from the current 1 hour and 15 minutes to 45 minutes.
