Menfi town declares financial disaster

The Menfi City Council has approved the financial crisis of the municipality. The decision was forced, stemming from the 14 million euro deficit in which the municipality finds itself.
“Unfortunately, it was necessary to put an end to it, now we start from scratch,” said Mayor Vito Clemente, elected less than a year ago to lead a center-left administration. He also specified that “all possible avenues have been tried to rebalance the municipal finances in a less traumatic way. But it was the same board of auditors that concluded that there was no other alternative.” The mayor then explains that this deficit was generated “by high tax evasion on local taxes and the amounts to be set aside for ongoing litigation, which have increased in just two years from half a million to 6 million euros.”
After the approval of the council resolution, the establishment of an extraordinary commission is foreseen, which will manage this phase. During the crisis period, the municipality will have to raise tax rates to the maximum allowed, will no longer be able to take out loans or make new hires.
