Via Maqueda is a historic road in Palermo, also known as the Strada Nuova, named after the Duke of Maqueda, Bernardino de CΓ‘rdenas, who traced it. Opened in 1600, it represented a new road axis cutting the city perpendicular to the pre-existing Cassaro. The street passes through important places such as the Teatro Massimo and the Quattro Canti, and has become a shopping street and a major tourist attraction. The Quattro Canti, also called Four Squares, is a Baroque square in the heart of Palermo, framed by four symmetrical facades, each representing one of the ancient quarters of the city. It is known for its clever display of perspective and is a popular attraction
