Catania: Bellini monument restored to shine again with electric bird deterrents

In Catania, the monument to Vincenzo Bellini, created in Stesicoro square in 1882 by sculptor Giulio Monteverde, has been freed from the construction site and returned to the city and visitors after restoration work directed by Mayor Enrico Trantino and the municipal council. The design was carried out by technicians from the Public Works Department, along with the councilor in charge, the deputy mayor, and the chief of staff, all of whom were present at the unveiling of the work funded by the tourist stay tax. Restoration work lasted four months and focused on recovering all the materials of the monument of the Catania Swan, damaged in several places by the passage of time and city pollution. The execution of the work, carried out in close collaboration with the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage, was entrusted to expert master restorers who used preservation and enhancement techniques for every part of the monument. Finally, an electric deterrent system was installed to drive away birds, especially pigeons, whose droppings had damaged the monument in several places, now returned to its former splendor.
