Water from Castello dam prohibited for irrigation, mayors of Agrigento and Palazzo Adriano protest.

The mayors of the irrigation district of Ribera, which also includes the towns of Alessandria della Rocca, Bivona, Cianciana, Lucca Sicula, and Palazzo Adriano, will meet tomorrow with the Secretary General of the Water Authority of the Hydrographic District of Sicily, Leonardo Santoro. They intend to express the concerns of their communities regarding the drought emergency, in a territory with a high agricultural vocation, especially referring to the decision that the water contained in the reservoirs is currently only intended for civil uses, excluding irrigation in the countryside.

All the farms in the area rely on the Castello dam, which currently contains only 9 million cubic meters of water compared to a normal capacity of over 20 million.

“We understand the emergency situation, but completely excluding the use of water for irrigation purposes is an incomprehensible decision, our agriculture is in danger,” says the mayor of Bivona, Milko Cinà. For him, “the bad politics of the last twenty years cannot be paid for by farmers and their families.”

On the same topic, former regional deputy Giovanni Panepinto, former mayor of Bivona, also commented, stating that “not only has nothing been done to prevent this emergency, but the news of the irrigation ban from the Castello dam was intended to be kept hidden, while the water from the Verdura river continues to flow into the sea.”
