Sicilian municipalities struggle with waste collection costs: request for extension of financial plans

The article discusses the need to extend the deadline for the submission of the Economic Financial Plan (Pef) by local municipalities in Sicily from April 30th to June 30th. This request arises due to the increased costs incurred by municipalities for waste management in emergency situations, which could potentially jeopardize their budgets. The article also highlights the proposal for a permanent table involving the government, region, and Sicilian municipalities to analyze and address the causes of financial distress in some municipalities. The Governor has pledged to support the national association of municipalities (Anci) in this matter and to provide extraordinary funding in the upcoming financial budget. Additionally, it is mentioned that out of 391 municipalities in Sicily, 111 are currently in a state of financial distress or pre-distress. The focus is on prioritizing administrative efficiency and ensuring timely financial resources are provided to municipalities for their expenses in 2024.
