With their intervention, they saved a man who, in desperation, wanted to take his own life by setting fire to his home full of gas bottles. They also prevented disastrous consequences for the city of Salemi. The administration and the City Council of the center of the Valle del Belice have decided to thank the municipal police officers, carabinieri, and firefighters who intervened on December 20, 2023, by awarding them a solemn commendation “for the selflessness and spirit of service demonstrated in the circumstance to protect the entire community.”
Seven commendations were awarded during a ceremony held at the Norman-Swabian Castle of Salemi. The awards went to the municipal police inspectors Paoletta Petralia (acting commander) and Peter Leo Cardillo, the selected corporal of the carabinieri Alessandro Geraci, the carabinieri marshal Enzo Lo Sciuto, the marshal major Aniello Camardella, commander of the carabinieri station of Salemi, the voluntary detachment of the firefighters of Salemi, and the provincial command of the firefighters of Trapani.
