Robbery at a gold buying store in Giarre, armed man caught in action
The carabinieri are examining the images from the cameras in a rather central area of Giarre, where a robbery took place this morning (April 30) shortly after 10:30 am. The victim is the owner of a gold shop on state road 114, which in that stretch is called via Callipoli. The store is located a few meters from the monument to the Fallen of piazza Alessi, in a rather busy commercial area.
All the neighboring shopkeepers are shaken, and now fear reigns among them. According to a preliminary reconstruction, a man would have broken into the shop, pushing a customer who had entered a few seconds before him: he was showing a jewel to the shop owner. The robber, who was wearing a light-colored jacket with partially covered face, allegedly brandished a knife, threatening the owner and the customer, who, terrified, took refuge in the bathroom in the meantime. The criminal then ransacked the store by opening the display cases and grabbing everything he could.
Then, with the loot placed in a bag, he disappeared on foot through the streets behind via Callipoli alta. The carabinieri quickly arrived on the scene and scoured the area but did not manage to track down the man, of whom they obtained a brief description. He is said to be a man in his fifties, of slim build, with a foreign accent. The owner of the gold shop, a young woman, suffered a fainting spell due to the strong shock. An ambulance from the 118 emergency service then intervened on the scene. The carabinieri are continuing their investigation.
