Partial reopening of Palermo’s English Garden: asphalt removed from paths and statues cleaned.

The English Garden of Palermo reopens. Partially. The first works have been completed and the side facing Via Libertà is once again accessible. Just in time for the traditional gathering for the Liberation Day celebration (tomorrow, April 25).

“We are doing this in the presence of schools,” emphasized Mayor Roberto Lagalla. “In a redeveloped environment both in terms of plant regeneration and conservation architecture. We have removed the horrible asphalt from the avenues, restored the porphyry. The borders of the flower beds have been rebuilt and we have eliminated tripping hazards caused by emerging roots. We have cleaned up the statuary heritage.”

The green area has been closed since February of last year for restoration and redevelopment works made possible by funds from the PNRR (2.5 million euros). Adding color to the day were the students from the Catalano Artistic High School, exhibiting some of their paintings and drawings along the avenues.

The scene was taken over by the winning float from the last Educarnevale edition, created by the students of the Artistic High School. The work, which impressed both the mayor and the Green councilor, Pietro Alongi, so much that they wanted to give them a role in one of the many initiatives of the next 400th Festino, represents Santa Rosalia surrounded by traditional roses.

“It’s no coincidence,” emphasized Alongi, “that there are students from the artistic high school: it will also become a fab-lab (experimentation laboratory) where there will be culture, environment, greenery, and everything will be combined together.” And he continued: “In this first reopened area, we have done a substantial and important job, even though invisible in some ways. The lighting system is ready and the poles will be placed in the coming days,” the councilor emphasized. “The irrigation system has been completely redone, necessary to ensure the lawn, and the tree roots have been freed from suffering, removing about 50 centimeters of cement.”

To fully understand the work, it will be necessary to wait until everything is completed, “by the end of the year,” Lagalla explained. “In the meantime, we have delivered the first installment to the city, even if we must admit with some days of delay, but nothing compared to what we were unfortunately accustomed to. The gardens must be available to the people of Palermo and their best expressive forms, nothing will prevent gardens from also entering into an artistic and multi-themed commitment.”
