Palermo’s railway loop, metro at Politeama by mid-2025

The people of Palermo will finally have the railway stop at Politeama, which will be ready for use in the first half of 2025. The works are continuing, with the completion of civil works expected by the end of 2024, and the opening for operation after Ansfisa’s authorization in the first half of 2025.

An important development is the Giachery-Politeama-Notabartolo axis in the railway ring. For the completion of the railway ring, a special government commissioner has also been appointed, Christian Colaneri, commercial director of RFI. The section covered by the contract concerns only the urban fabric of the city of Palermo and has a length of 1.6 km, with about 800 meters in a natural tunnel (Paternostro tunnel, to be built with mechanical excavation using Tbm), including the construction of the new Turrisi Colonna and Lazio stops, the adaptation of the future Politeama stop (subject of the finalizing contract of the ring – Phase I, currently in the final stages) and connection with the Notarbartolo station on the railway bypass.

The intervention on the infrastructure, which already offers a metropolitan service on a single track in the Sicilian capital between Notarbartolo station and Giachery stop, will allow the closure of the ring (hence the name) of the route, increasing its capacity and accessibility and allowing potential direct connection between Falcone and Borsellino international airport and the port of Palermo.
