Palermo’s COP29 document shaping up at the Abbazia di San Martino delle Scale
Climate change, political and religious institutions, academic and professional organizations come together to address environmental challenges and draft a shared document to be presented at Cop 29. The meeting is scheduled for Saturday, October 26, starting at 9 am at the Abbey of San Martino delle Scale. Participants include Monsignor Lorefice, MEP Falcone, the director of the Vatican’s “Laudato Si” Higher Education Center, Fabio Baggio, and Mustafa Ceric Gran Mufti, representative of the Episcopal Conference. The aim is to promote concrete strategies and shared practical solutions to address integral ecology issues starting from local communities, in order to prepare a joint proposal on how to effectively combat climate change. This proposal will be integrated into a protocol presented by the Giuseppe Benedetto Dusmet ETS Foundation at the upcoming Cop29 conference in Baku, Azerbaijan from November 11 to 22. The seminar titled “Integral Ecology: Challenges and Opportunities to Address the Sustainability Crisis” is organized by the Giuseppe Benedetto Dusmet ETS Foundation in collaboration with the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Pontifical Gregorian University, taking place at the historic Abbey of San Martino delle Scale on Saturday, October 26. The meeting, moderated by Andrea, director of L’Osservatore Romano, will feature interventions from various representatives discussing environmental sustainability. The outcomes will be included in the document presented at Cop 29, and signatories will be appointed as teachers for the high-level training course on Integral Ecology starting in January 2025. The day will also include an exhibition titled “Taking Care of Nature” featuring artistic creations by Claudio Villafranca using recycled materials. Key speakers include Senator Daniela Termullo, MEP Marco Falcone, Archbishop Corrado Lorefice of Palermo, Mustafa Ceric Gran Mufti Emeritus of Eastern Europe, Paolo Patricolo, Vicar for Sicily Orthodoxy in Italy, Vittorio Rizzo, Abbot of San Martino delle Scale, Father Peter Lah, Paolo Conversi, professors at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Pontifical Gregorian University, Cristiano Bevilacqua, Scientific Director of the Dusmet Foundation, Angelo Vincenzo Zani, activist and librarian of the Holy Roman Church, Fabio Baggio, General Director of the “Laudato Si” Higher Education Center of the Vatican, Maria Siclari, General Director of the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research, and Francesco Campagna, Consul of Ghana.
