Palermo: Sferracavallo sea becomes swimmable

The sea of Sferracavallo, in Palermo, is once again suitable for bathing. The bacterial levels in the waters of the gulf have returned to normal levels. This was reported by data published on the Ministry of Health’s water portal. According to the latest surveys, the water quality is “sufficient” at the Bagni establishment and “good” at the Barcarello stretch.

The committee “Il Mare di Sferracavallo” had asked the hygiene service of the Municipality of Palermo to withdraw the last ordinance issued last year. The case arose last summer, when a series of municipal ordinances were necessary to establish a ban on bathing in certain stretches of the sea of Sferracavallo. In particular, the tests showed an exceedance of the parameter relating to intestinal enterococci, a subgroup of organisms defined as fecal streptococci, an indicator of pollution from sewage discharges.

The Municipality, along with Amap technicians, launched a campaign of checks to identify any illegal connections and was forced to reiterate the ordinances until late October. Today, the emergency is over.
