Palermo Nursing: Ranocchia sees the light, Aurelio at risk, Vasic recovering, Di Mariano sidelined

The Palermo is ready to welcome back Ranocchia. The midfielder from Palermo is on the road to recovery and in recent days has partially trained with the team. Yesterday (April 24) he participated in the entire training session with his teammates including a small game. The hope of seeing him included in the squad for the match against Reggiana is concrete, although it seems unlikely that he will be able to start immediately.

Ranocchia has been sidelined since mid-March due to a hamstring injury in his right thigh, which was discovered after a muscle strain suffered in the match against Lecco. For Palermo, this period has seen five games played resulting in three points from three consecutive draws achieved under the new coach Mignani. Before this run of “X” games, there were two consecutive losses against Venezia (at home) and Pisa (away).

Before his injury, Ranocchia had become a key player in the team under coach Corini. Since his arrival, his impact on the team had been significant in terms of quality and quantity, given his ability in both defensive and offensive phases. Additionally, Ranocchia had shown a knack for scoring goals. He had scored four consecutive goals in impressive performances that had helped the team play more harmoniously and achieve results against direct competitors for the top spots in the league, such as the clear 3-0 victory against Como at the Barbera stadium (pictured), and the draw against Cremonese, achieved in a rather dramatic manner with Palermo equalizing in just a few minutes despite being down to ten men.

Now, with coach Mignani, Palermo has changed its formation and it will be interesting to see what solutions the coach will implement. The idea is to clearly position Ranocchia in his natural role as a central midfielder-attacking midfielder, a position that Di Francesco had been occupying (with good results). However, it is evident that the number 14 for Palermo will have to interpret the role differently than the former Sassuolo and Lecce player. It is likely that in the final rush, Mignani will make some modifications to the offensive department, considering the importance of Di Francesco, who is always able to create potentially dangerous opportunities with his speed and technique. It remains to be seen whether these changes will be implemented immediately against Reggiana, or in the subsequent match against Spezia, where Ranocchia should be fully fit.

While Ranocchia is close to a full return, Palermo may have to do without Aurelio. The former Pontedera left-back has felt some muscular discomfort and his condition will need to be evaluated to determine his availability for the match against Reggiana on Saturday afternoon at the Barbera stadium, although it is unlikely that he would have started anyway.

Throughout this week, Mignani hopes to also have Vasic available. The Serbian U21 international has been out since the beginning of the month due to a bone edema in the third and fourth metatarsals of his right foot, but his return is not far off. Di Mariano, on the other hand, will continue to be absent as he received 19 stitches after a collision with Estevez of Parma during a game.
