Palermo gang rape: lawyers of the 6 accused will ask to hear the victim

Explain it briefly in English
The defense strategy of the six young adults accused of participating in a group rape in Palermo on July 7 is based on a new hearing of the victim in light of new evidence gathered by the lawyers of the accused. The defense attorneys will request at the next hearing that the victim be re-auditioned, who had already been heard by the Palermo GIP Clelia Maltese two months ago in a probative incident.
The lawyers of the six accused – Cristina Lo Bue, Elio Arnao, Cristian Barone, Gabriele Di Trapani, Angelo Flores, Samuele La Grassa, and Christian Maronia – would like the young woman to be asked new questions based on some acquisitions, especially audio from third parties. The material collected by the defense, already presented in a separate hearing in March, had not been admitted into the case files, but the lawyers insist. The “new evidence”, according to the attorneys, would demonstrate that the young woman did not resist along the way to the place where the rape took place and did not ask for help from passersby encountered on the street. The aim is to prove that the victim was consenting.
The preliminary hearing, held before GUP Lo Bue, has been postponed to April 29. If the judge does not admit the conditional quick trial, the accused will have to choose between a regular quick trial or an ordinary trial. The special trial provides for a one-third sentence reduction. Both the six adult accused and the seventh minor member of the gang, who has already been sentenced to 8 years and 8 months, are currently in prison.
