Lipari begins mega yacht season: Marala arrives, hosted King Juan Carlos, Dalì and Sinatra

In Lipari, in the bay of Marina Lunga, the mega yacht Marala, measuring 59 meters, was on display. It is the second yacht to arrive in a short period of time. The RoMa, a 62-meter yacht, anchored off the coast of pumices on an island without adequate ports. The mayor, Riccardo Gullo, is moving quickly and has approved a new port plan. Marala has been sailing the seas for 90 years and has hosted King Juan Carlos of Spain, artist Salvador Dalì, singer Frank Sinatra, and even last June, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands in Panarea.

Built in 1931 at the Camper & Nicholsons shipyard in England, Marala was originally commissioned by Shell oil magnate Sir Bernard Docker in honor of his marriage to Margaret. The yacht was later purchased by Australian entrepreneur Alan Bond in 1996 who invested millions in its restoration. In 2018, it was sold to a new owner who organizes luxury cruises for the rich.

RoMa, a 62-meter yacht, also made an appearance in Lipari a month ago. Previously owned by Austrian tycoon Renè Benko, founder of Signa Holding GmbH, the largest private real estate conglomerate in Austria, RoMa was sold due to financial difficulties. The mayor, known for developing the first tourist port in Santa Marina Salina, is now focusing on the main island with a planned expenditure of 60 million euros.
