Journalist from Caltanissetta dies after surgery, 5 doctors under investigation

The preliminary hearing for the five doctors investigated for the death of Lino Lacagnina, a journalist from Nisseno who died at the age of 74 at the Sant’Elia hospital in Caltanissetta, has been scheduled for May 21 at 9:30 am. They are the head of vascular surgery at the hospital Nicola Reina, 64 years old, the vascular surgeons Filippo Calì, 57 years old, and Michele Savaia, 44 years old, the head of Radiology Salvatore Dell’Aira, 69 years old, and the director of the Vascular Surgery department at the Santa Maria della Misericordia University Hospital in Udine, Paolo Frigatti, who was present during the surgery. The wife and sisters of the journalist, assisted by lawyers Vincenzo Toscano and Aldo Bellomo, filed a complaint. The five doctors are being investigated for manslaughter, aggravated by not following guidelines. In addition, three of the defendants are also accused of the crime of falsifying public documents. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, they allegedly omitted to write in the surgical register the presence in the operating room of the professor from Udine who acted as a tutor. The five doctors are assisted by lawyers William Giacalone, Sergio Iacona, Giacomo Butera, and Rosaria Sammartino.
