Friends and acquaintances remember Luigi Carollo on social media: “Image of a courageous Sicily”

Luigi Carollo, spokesperson for Palermo Pride and activist for Lgbtqia+ rights, was a reference point against homophobia, gender violence, and all forms of discrimination for many years. His battles made him a beloved figure, and after news of his death, hundreds wanted to remember him through social media. Friends, family, and acquaintances shared anecdotes and photos together.

Renzo Conti wrote on Facebook, “In the last decade you were close to me like a brother, always by my side, almost as a form of protection. I will not forget, I love you Luigi Carollo.”

“When I think of you, dear Luigi, I think of the strength of intelligence, the richness of your gaze, the beauty of diversity,” wrote Andrea Cusumano. “Sitting next to you was always a revolutionary experience because you had an unparalleled talent for reinterpreting reality and transforming it. Dear Luigi, I cannot imagine how Palermo can continue to be smart without you. We still needed your brilliant arguments, never obvious, always ending with a smile. You were the incarnation of dialogical, fluid thought, the clearest expression of an intelligence always at the service of the community. How much beauty in your words, always. Now I am in Vienna and I have the feeling that when I return home, I will find less of Palermo…you leave just when the strength of your ideas was needed most. But a better world is on the horizon. Always!”

Celeste Costantino added, “I just found out that my friend and companion Luigi Carollo is no longer with us. But how is that possible? We spoke. A few months ago, two hours on the phone. He told me this year we will do the Palermo Pride together. And he went on to tell me ideas, propose analysis, gossip. I’m sorry, but I don’t believe it. I really can’t believe it.”

“With Luigi, I shared many battles and political spaces. With him, combining social and civil rights was very simple because he was a true companion, empathetic, who felt others’ suffering as his own. With him, a precious analysis of the present from that unique point of view goes away. I learned so much from you and your truth. Thank you Luigi, and please, wherever you are, never be brief because aside from my teasing, you were never enough,” added Giuseppe Castrianni.

“Luigi Carollo was a reference point for a great revolution that slowly began to win. Image and voice of a rebellious and non-trivial, courageous and fabulous Sicily. You will be missed by all of us, you will live in all of us,” wrote Matteo Iannitti.
