A doctor in Syracuse is accused of accepting money in exchange for writing a false medical certificate that stated a detainee was addicted to cocaine. The purpose of this was to reduce the detainee’s restrictive regime or have them admitted to a drug rehabilitation center. The doctor has been charged with corruption and embezzlement. The investigation also uncovered suspicions of embezzlement, as the doctor allegedly accepted payments from patients without depositing any of the money into the public institution. The doctor has been suspended from public office and prohibited from practicing medicine for eight months.
