Corruption and clientelism at Taormina Sewer Network Consortium: Former officials and entrepreneurs in trouble

Corruption, disturbed freedom in the bidding process, falsification, fraud, and environmental pollution. These are the accusations that have led financial investigators from Messina and police officers from Taormina to carry out a preventive custody order against various individuals linked to the Taormina Sewer Consortium, responsible for the sewer system in the Ionian area of Messina.

The suspension from public office has been ordered for a former executive of the Taormina Sewer Consortium, the operator of the sewer system in the Ionian area of Messina, and a temporary ban for two entrepreneurs from the province of Messina and a professional who was previously a manager of the entity, from entering into contracts with the Public Administration.

The investigations, carried out by the Taormina police and the financial police, have revealed a consolidated system of mismanagement of public functions, violating the principles of correctness, transparency, and impartiality. In particular, two executives had control over the maintenance work of the public entity, assigning them arbitrarily for personal purposes.

Additionally, it was found that the purification plant was being used without authorization and maintenance, causing damage to the Alcantara river ecosystem. The judge for preliminary investigations ordered the seizure of a vehicle used for the illegal transport of waste and the unauthorized discharge of sewage.

The plant managed by the Consortium has been seized during the investigations and is currently under judicial administration, but remains operational and compliant with maintenance regulations.
