Coast guard detains Mediterranea’s Mare Jonio after rescue in Porto Empedocle

The Coast Guard, at the conclusion of the inspection on board, ordered the detention of the Mare Jonio ship of Mediterranea Saving Humans. The crew, after repeated requests, had managed to obtain the safe port of Porto Empedocle and not that of Naples as originally ordered. A administrative fine of 4 thousand euros was also imposed on them. The allegations against the ship, which disembarked 58 migrants rescued in international waters, are related to the lack of authorizations from the flag State, namely Italy, and further prescriptions related to the Piantedosi decree.
