Carabinieri General Command: “Closeness to Mori has brought pride to the Corps”

“In full respect of the work of the judiciary, the Carabinieri express their support for an officer who, through his service, has brought honor to the institution in Italy and abroad, trusting that even in this circumstance he will be able to demonstrate his innocence regarding the contested facts.” This statement was made by the general command of the Carabinieri in a note following the news of the precautionary measure issued by the Florence prosecutor against General Mario Mori.

The latest precautionary measure was notified to him on May 16, the day of his 85th birthday. The charges General Mario Mori must respond to include massacre, association with the mafia, association with the aim of international terrorism, and subversion of the democratic order. However, the former head of the Ros and former director of the Sisde has already made the news of the legal action received known, along with the invitation to appear before the magistrates of Florence on May 23, the day of the 32nd anniversary of the massacre that claimed the life of Judge Giovanni Falcone. Mori has also stated that he will not appear on that date, due to commitments of his lawyer, Basilio Milio.

The Undersecretary to the Presidency of the Council Alfredo Mantovano and the Minister of Defense Guido Crosetto, along with other members of the majority, including Rita Dalla Chiesa, leader of Forza Italia in the Chamber, are standing by the general. Mantovano said, “I met General Mario Mori at Palazzo Chigi, whom I have known for over 25 years, and have always appreciated his analytical clarity and operational ability. I expressed my support for him in the face of the accusations he is facing, of which he has informed me; on the other hand, I am dismayed, despite decades of judgments that have already proven the absolute groundlessness of certain accusations.” Crosetto added, “We could not be content with having made his life a living hell for decades; we could not accept the fact that he had been acquitted of all charges…”.

After 22 years of trials, all of which ended in acquittal, the former head of the Ros is now under investigation again. According to the prosecutors in Florence, despite being aware of the intentions of the Mafia to commit massacres, in 1993 Mori allegedly turned a blind eye and did nothing to thwart the death plans of the mafiosi. Mori commented, “The accusations against me, as everyone can easily understand, are surreal and laughable if it were not for the moral lynching that I will be forced to endure for who knows how many years.” He also expressed his deep disgust for the accusations, which offend not only him but also the serious magistrates he worked with throughout his career in the fight against terrorism and the Mafia, including Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino.

“I am deeply disgusted by these accusations, which offend, before my person, the serious magistrates with whom I have worked productively throughout my career in the fight against terrorism and the Mafia, especially Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino. Perhaps I am not forgiven for not meeting their tragic fate,” Mori bitterly concluded.”
