Benito Mussolini and Fascist leaders no longer honorary citizens of Ustica

Benito Mussolini and the fascist hierarchs are no longer honorary citizens of the island of Ustica. An amendment, approved today (April 19) by the city council, has modified the regulations: honors are revoked for all deceased individuals.

The controversy in Ustica over the honorary citizenship awarded to Benito Mussolini and other fascist hierarchs in 1924 erupted in recent days after a proposal by the majority was presented to the council, which specifically stated that “the conferment and revocation of honorary recognition” could only be decided by the City Council if the person is still alive. Opposition councilors had presented an amendment to these final three lines of the document, announcing a battle in the council chamber.

“To revoke the honorary citizenship of Benito Mussolini and the fascist hierarchs Roberto Farinacci, Pietro Lanza di Scalea, Alfredo Cucco, and Cesare Mori is an act of civilization owed to all those who were victims of racial laws and who died defending freedom and democracy in our country,” said councilors from the council group All Together for Ustica Diego Altezza, Martina Natale, and Maria Ailara.

The honorary citizenship regulation, proposed by the right-wing administration led by Mayor Salvatore Militello, aimed to prevent the revocation of honorary citizenship for all those who have obtained it and who are deceased. But this morning, the opposition’s amendment was indeed approved, which provides for the revocation of honorary citizenship for the deceased, including Benito Mussolini and the fascist hierarchs.
