April 25th in Messina: Rainy Resistance Bike Ride and Ceremony in the Square

In Messina, for the Liberation Day celebration, the Uisp and the Fiab “Messina ciclabile”, in collaboration with Cgil and other associations, organized the “Resilient Bike Ride” starting at 9:30 am from via Pascoli. It crossed the streets of the city center with a stop in Piazza Francesco Lo Sardo, also known as Piazza del Popolo, to remember the Messinese antifascist who died in prison under the regime.

A delegation from Anpi, led by President Giuseppe Martino and with the association’s flag carried by Paola Fazio, at 10 am in Piazza Unione Europea, participated in the official ceremony for the 79th anniversary of Liberation. From 11 am to 12:30 pm in Piazza dell’Unione Europea, after the arrival of the bike ride and the conclusion of the official event, there were collective readings of poems, literature excerpts on Resistance, freedom, and biographies of some Messinese partisans. Despite the rain, the 79th Anniversary of Liberation was commemorated with the traditional ceremony of laying laurel wreaths at the Monument to the Fallen.

Civil, military, and religious authorities, combat associations, and representatives of schools participated in the event. Honors were paid to the Flag of the City of Messina (decorated with the Gold Medal for Military Valor, Gold Medal for Civil Valor and Cross of War for Military Valor), the Flag of the Metropolitan City of Messina, the Medal of the Blue Ribbon and the Banners and Flags of Combat Associations and Arms.
