Palermo: Ribera youth sentenced to 5 years for seriously injuring Cervello hospital doctor

The judge of the court of Palermo Marco Gaeta has accepted the agreement between the prosecution and the defense and ratified the plea deal to five years for Paolo Montalbano, 23 years old, from Ribera (Agrigento), accused of the attempted murder of Alfredo Caputo, head of the Cervello hospital in the Sicilian capital.

The doctor had been attacked last February in the department he directs, Oncological Endocrinology. With a box cutter, Montalbano had struck Caputo on the right ear, also severing the tendon of the left arm, with which the doctor had tried to fend off the blows.

The serious physical injuries justified the high penalty, for one of the many episodes of aggression against medical staff that have occurred in recent months. The suspect had gone to the hospital at the end of January to get prescribed drugs recommended by another specialist, and Caputo had refused due to the lack of a therapeutic plan. The young man had then returned after about ten days and had carried out his revenge in the Palermo hospital.
