26-year-old Palermo carabiniere dies in accident on highway to Messina

A 26-year-old carabiniere, originally from Palermo, died in a collision between a car and a truck on the A20 Palermo-Messina highway. The young military officer was traveling alone in his car. The accident occurred in the early afternoon of today, April 29, between Brolo and Rocca di Caprileone, heading towards Palermo.

For reasons still under investigation, the carabiniere’s vehicle collided with a truck that was in front of him inside the Cipolla tunnel, a few hundred meters after the Brolo highway exit, in a section where there are roadworks and a narrowing of the roadway. The impact was fatal for the young man.

The driver of the heavy vehicle was unharmed but in a state of shock, and was taken to the hospital in Sant’Agata Militello for checks. At the scene were the highway police, firefighters, ambulances, emergency response vehicles, and a patrol of Carabinieri.

The on-duty prosecutor of the Patti district, Giovanna Lombardo, authorized the removal of the body and its transfer to the Papardo hospital in Messina for an autopsy, to be performed in the coming days by Professor Daniela Sapienza.

The highway between the Brolo and Rocca di Capri Leone exits, heading towards Palermo, has been closed to traffic.

Today’s accident comes just days after a similar incident on the Palermo-Messina highway that cost the life of Giuseppe Serio, a 66-year-old truck driver from Palermo, who overturned his truck between the Rocca di Capri Leone and Sant’Agata di Militello exits on Saturday, April 20.
