Watering plants with drinking water banned in drought-hit Palermo

The mayor of Palermo, Roberto Lagalla, has signed an ordinance which “prohibits the population residing in the municipal territory until the end of December 31, or until the emergency is declared over, from using drinking water to water plants on balconies and gardens from 5 am to 11 pm, and to wash private vehicles, with the exception of car washes.”

The ordinance is related to the severe water crisis in Sicily. The municipal police will enforce the ordinance, and those who violate the prohibitions will face a fine ranging from 25 to 500 euros.

For the same period of time, and during the same time range, it is forbidden to “wash courtyards and yards and to feed decorative fountains, tanks, and pools, if they are not equipped with artificial water recycling devices.”

The provision excludes “the use of drinking water for entrepreneurial activities for which the use of drinking water is necessary, within the limits of what is authorized.”
