Waste treatment plant in Palermo reopens to handle mixed waste: Rap’s plan to end emergency.

The full efficiency of the Bellolmapo Mechanical Biological Treatment (Tmb) has been restored. The works, in recent months, had caused significant slowdowns in the garbage disposal from Palermo to the landfill. Coparm Srl redesigned the entire feeding system, performed extraordinary maintenance on the rotating screens, replaced faulty parts, provided new conveyors of its own production, and designed and built two new power supply lines.

“For us, today is a very important day,” explained Rap’s president, Giuseppe Todaro. “After 9 months today (May 10th), the plant reopens, and we are coming out of a semi-emergency state. This plant will have the capacity to treat 90% of the city’s non-differentiated waste.” The facility will be able to carry out “a much more selective collection – recovering much more organic matter, iron, and aluminum,” said the head of Piazzetta Cairoli.

The plant is therefore used to treat non-differentiated waste in order to deposit it in tanks or produce energy. A big news on this last point: Mayor Roberto Lagalla has given a favorable opinion on the installation of two new anaerobic lines in the Tmb, currently managed by Asia Ambiente. “As you know, it is a public-private partnership,” Todaro explains, “where Rap will interact with the Snav group that will build a plant that will produce biomethane from all organic fraction.”

Pleased with the news, Councilor Pietro Alongi highlights the “huge savings” that a landfill like Bellolampo brings to the Municipality. “About 10 million per month,” he explains, “if we didn’t have a functioning landfill, we would have to take the waste outside at exorbitant costs.”

Regarding the possibility of hosting a waste-to-energy plant, he explains that “the President of the Sicilian Region, Renato Schifani, has identified areas including Bellolampo, which could easily host it. This does not mean that we are already hosting it, but that we need to dialogue with the territory and look ahead.” This also means expanding separate collection, which will reach another two hundred thousand citizens from mid-June, Alongi explains, “and there is a tender underway for new vehicles. In 2025, separate collection will reach the South area, therefore Brancaccio and the Oreto area.”
