Ustica council does not revoke Mussolini’s citizenship

The municipal council of Ustica, by majority vote, has decided not to revoke the honorary citizenship of Benito Mussolini. The regional deputy Ismaele La Vardera and leader of the group at the Ars di Sud Chiama Nord expressed concern over this decision, and mentioned that they will speak with the mayor to understand if the town still follows fascist ideologies. The opposition group had requested the revocation of Mussolini’s honorary citizenship, but the council decided not to discuss the matter. This sparked a debate about the need for a law to revoke the honorary citizenship granted to Mussolini by many Italian municipalities.

Frank Ferlisi, the provincial secretary of Rifondazione Comunista in Palermo, also commented on the issue. He criticized the Ustica administration for opposing the revocation of Mussolini’s honorary citizenship, and highlighted the need for a law to rectify this historical revisionism. He called for Parliament to legislate on revoking Mussolini’s honorary citizenship nationwide, in line with constitutional values.
