Two arrests in Catania after being stabbed by relatives over disputed inheritance
Strong disagreements between family members over an inheritance would be the motive behind a attempted murder committed on October 12, 2021 in Catania which led to the arrest, three years later, of the two alleged perpetrators, Benedetto Giuseppe La Martina, 62, and Gaetano Popolo, 52, who were subject to a custody order issued by the judge on the request of the Catania Prosecutor’s Office.
The investigations by the mobile squad of the Catania Police Headquarters started after a person arrived at the emergency room of the Cannizzaro hospital in a life-threatening condition due to stab wounds to the abdomen and leg. Witnesses present, according to the reconstruction of the Prosecutor’s Office, tried to conceal the incident, claiming that the man had injured himself at home in the Picanello district while cutting meat. The investigation, also with the help of forensic police and a video of the attempted murder, led to a different reconstruction of the events, including the dynamics. The accusation is that La Martina allegedly stabbed the relative at least four times, while Popolo held him from behind.
The judge, at the request of the Prosecutor’s Office, ordered pre-trial detention for La Martina and house arrest for Popolo, with the obligation to wear an electronic bracelet. Both are charged, in conspiracy, with attempted murder aggravated by trivial reasons.
