Trial begins for two technicians in Ravanusa explosion and massacre

The trial for the Via Trilussa massacre in Ravanusa, caused by a gas leak explosion in December 2021, began yesterday at the Agrigento court. The incident resulted in the death of nine people, including an unborn child, and injuries to two others, as well as the destruction of an entire neighborhood. During the hearing, the lawyers representing the victims, including Salvatore Loggia and Salvatore Manganello, debated their case in front of Judge Giuseppe Zampino. The session was then adjourned until December 5th to hear the arguments from the defense lawyers and prosecutor Salvatore Vella. Two defendants, Carmelo Burgarello and Guido Catalano, are facing charges of accidental disaster and multiple counts of manslaughter. The prosecutor has requested the charges against ten other individuals, who are technicians or executives at Italgas Spa, to be dropped. The trial has garnered significant attention and is being covered in detail by Paolo Picone in today’s edition of the Giornale di Sicilia.
