Tremestieri Etneo investigation: turncoat against Sammartino, “I met a boss”

Luca Sammartino reportedly met with prominent figures of the Santapaola clan in 2015, as reconstructed by the collaborator Silvio Corra. Corra’s statements, some based on firsthand knowledge and others hearsay, are considered reliable by the Catania prosecutor’s office.

Corra joined Cosa Nostra in 2004 due to his relationship with his brother-in-law Angelo Santapaola, who was in charge of the organization until his assassination in September 2007. After his release from prison in 2013, Corra became a trusted man of the acting leader at the time, Francesco Colluccio Santapaola, managing extortion activities. He started cooperating with the authorities on August 15, 2020, while still free.

In a precautionary measure, the prosecutor’s office reconstructs an episode where Corra personally accompanied the high-ranking member of the mafia association, Francesco Colluccio Santapaola, to Vito Romeo’s house for meetings with politicians, particularly the mayoral candidate of Tremestieri Etneo, Santi Rando, who is Romeo’s brother-in-law, and another individual whose physical description Corra provided but knew little else about. Corra also mentioned that on a couple of occasions, another individual showed up at these meetings, whom he recognized from a photo as Sammartino but didn’t know his name. Romeo later informed Corra that they would support the mayoral candidate who would bring them “work and money.”

The article is accompanied by a frame of wiretaps from the investigation.
