Trapani: power lines removed from Saline Nature Reserve

The article explains that two power lines, called “Birgi” and “Verderame”, that crossed the northern part of the Regional Nature Reserve of the Saline di Trapani and Paceco in Italy have been removed. This area is an internationally important wetland managed by WWF Italy and recognized under the Ramsar Convention and as a site of the Natura 2000 network protected by the European Union. The removal of the power lines was necessary to eliminate any possible environmental impact on a migratory route for birds traveling between Africa and Europe. The electric company, E-Distribuzione, has agreed to remove the lines and replace them with buried lines outside the reserve to ensure the continuity of electric service in the area without risking harm to the birds. This decision was made to protect the avifauna in the area and comply with national and regional regulations as well as EU directives. The company has obtained the necessary permits to carry out the removal of the existing power lines, which consisted of 40 supports and towers and about 7,000 meters of overhead conductors.
