Tragedy averted in Roccalumera as large pipes detach from viaduct and fall onto road

A near tragedy occurred in Roccalumera, in the province of Messina. This morning, two large iron pipes detached from the Allume viaduct of the A18 highway and fell down. Fortunately, at that moment, there were no pedestrians or cars passing under the bridge, and no one was injured.

The pipes, likely fallen due to the collapse of the supports, spilled onto the road below, also landing on some metal fences. The pipes were installed in parallel on one side of the bridge deck, along the lane towards Messina.

Passersby alerted the local police. Officers from the local police and technicians from the Municipality of Roccalumera arrived on the scene and reported the incident to the Consortium for Sicilian highways, which will take steps to secure the pipes.

Additionally, the local police and the technical office closed three roads to traffic, including the two dirt tracks on the banks of the river and another connecting road.
