Tourist suffers illness on cruise, rescued at sea off Marettimo

An 80-year-old English tourist was rescued aboard the Maltese-flagged cruise ship Marella Explorer in an operation coordinated by the Port Authority’s operations room involving the Birgi aeronautics helicopter, a resuscitation doctor, and a nurse from the emergency medical service. The woman, while at sea 24 miles from Marettimo, fell ill. The helicopter from Birgi was dispatched and arrived at the cruise ship’s location. There, she was stabilized by the 118 doctors and taken aboard the helicopter to Sant’Antonio Abate Hospital in Trapani.
