The mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro’s condition has worsened, according to his lawyer: he needs to be hospitalized immediately.

“Matteo Messina Denaro is now completely incompatible with the prison system, especially with the harsh 41bis regime, and he must be immediately hospitalized.” This is stated by the lawyer from Abruzzo (from Vasto, in the province of Chieti), Alessandro Cerella, who, since June 25th, has been supporting lawyer Lorenza Guttadauro in the defense of the mafia boss. The two lawyers will submit an urgent request for hospitalization to the Court of Liberty in L’Aquila, the place where the prisoner under the 41bis regime has already undergone a urological surgical intervention on June 27th, with a massive deployment of law enforcement forces around the facility.
According to the lawyer, Matteo Messina Denaro’s health conditions have worsened in recent weeks, to the point that the prisoner – as Cerella reports – is forced to only consume fruit juices and other supplements. “On this point – the lawyer added – I want to emphasize the extraordinary and commendable work that the team led by Professor Mutti has been carrying out since the moment they started taking care of my client.”
The deteriorating clinical picture is causing the boss from Castelvetrano to be continuously rushed to the hospital in L’Aquila, the latest being last week.
The boss, sentenced to life imprisonment for the massacres of 1992-1993, has been detained in L’Aquila since January 16th, after being arrested in Palermo by the ROS carabinieri. It was precisely his illness that led investigators and magistrates to track him down. In a note found on December 6th at his sister Rosalia’s house, a medical diary of the fugitive was discovered, documenting the surgeries he underwent, the examinations, and the cycles of chemotherapy.
In the prison of L’Aquila, Matteo Messina Denaro is being followed by a medical team who have set up a specialized room near his cell for the chemotherapy treatments. Just as it had happened with Bernardo Provenzano, the other historic mafia boss, who in the last period of his life was hospitalized in a prison facility at the hospital in Parma. Immediately after Denaro’s transfer to the supermax prison in L’Aquila, the Trapani boss met his daughter and sisters.
