Terna and Steg secure EU funds for Italy-North Africa submarine power link

The signing ceremony for the Elmed electric interconnection project took place in Brussels as part of the fourth edition of the Pci Energy Days. This project, a collaboration between Italy and Tunisia, will create an invisible energy bridge connecting Europe and North Africa. With a total investment of 850 million euros, the project will involve a 220-kilometer-long submarine cable, 200 kilometers of which will be at a maximum depth of about 800 meters. The 600MW power connection will contribute to the integration of electricity markets and energy supply security by diversifying sources. The project will also contribute to reducing climate-altering emissions, helping both Italy and Tunisia to achieve energy and climate targets. The signing of an agreement for the funding of 307 million euros by the EU Connecting Europe Facility marks the first time such funding has been allocated to a project between an EU member state and a third country. The project will also symbolize exceptional levels of cooperation between the two continents. The Pci Energy Days bring together EU member states, regulators, network operators, and promoters of common interest projects, such as Elmed, to share successful experiences and discuss the future challenges for modernizing and developing EU energy infrastructure.
