Syracuse’s Capuchin Latomie denied to people with disabilities: Soprintendenza rejects elevator

The Superintendent has given a negative opinion on the project for the construction of an elevator in the Latomie dei Cappuccini in Siracusa. The mayor of Siracusa, Francesco Italia, is disappointed because the decision prevents people with disabilities, elderly people, or those with temporary reduced mobility from accessing this unique and suggestive place that is part of the city’s heritage. Access to the Latomie is currently only possible via a staircase, and the proposed glass panoramic elevator did not receive approval due to archaeological conservation and environmental impact concerns. The Latomie, originally a stone quarry, has historical significance and has been transformed over the centuries into a place of worship as well as a necropolis. The mayor and the local community are disappointed that people with reduced mobility will not be able to access this important site.
