In Stromboli, after the cloudburst, even the path leading to the crater is impracticable. This is what Mario Zaia, a veteran vulcanological guide known as “Zazà”, is saying, who has been guiding tourists up and down with Iddu for about half a century to admire a unique spectacle in the world.
“After last Saturday’s incessant rain – he explains with still teary eyes and anger in his body – besides the damage to my house and my family, with a disabled wife and the escape route blocked by the mud that we’ve been shoveling for two days to clear the entrance, I also worried about the path that is our source of livelihood. During the hike, I realized that it is no longer passable. There are even large rocks teetering on the edge that could end up in the narrow streets where even giants have already rolled. Here people’s lives are constantly at risk. Thankfully, there is an alternative path, but our lives here are now at risk. At night when it rains, we are terrified.”
For now, it is not possible to climb to the top of the crater, but only up to 400 meters in altitude due to the intense activity that has been ongoing for months.
