Stranded in Palermo, travelers abandon flight to Lourdes

From Palermo airport, they were supposed to board a flight to Lourdes but ended up trapped for over 24 hours inside Falcone Borsellino airport, between the 19th and 20th of October. With continuous flight delays, lack of information, and inadequate assistance, they were ultimately forced to return home. A couple of pilgrims shared their ordeal, experienced with fellow travelers including disabled individuals and children, in a letter sent to the mayor of Trapani Giacomo Tranchida, who is seeking answers from the Sicilian Region, the Ministry of Transport, and Gesap, the airport management company, “to receive responses on the serious events”.

The pilgrims had arrived at the airport on the 19th to catch the Volotea flight at 22:55, but at that time the airport was experiencing huge difficulties due to a downpour that flooded some areas and a blackout that caused the system to crash.

“No one informed us,” writes the couple who had traveled from Trapani to Palermo. Without precise information, forced to sleep at the airport, and subjected to numerous flight schedule changes for Lourdes, some pilgrims sought police intervention. In the end, they had to give up on the departure, they will be refunded, but now the mayor of Trapani is asking the airport management company for an explanation.
