Rescue helicopters and military planes save children between Sicily and the Peninsula

A patient has been transferred in emergency from Calabria to the Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Department in Taormina. He is the second one in the last 48 hours. The young man, a congenital adult, was transported by helicopter from the Melacrinò Morelli Hospital in Reggio Calabria. He is a heart patient with a bleeding complication and needs to undergo emergency surgery.

“This is the second emergency in just 48 hours,” says Sasha Agati, director of the Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Department in Taormina. “Another patient, in fact, was transferred to our department overnight between Saturday and Sunday and has already undergone interventional cardiology procedure.” Currently, there are 21 children hospitalized in Taormina. Yesterday, a four-month-old baby, hospitalized at the Vittorio Emanuele Polyclinic in Catania and in need of urgent specialized care, was transported to Ciampino airport aboard a Falcon 50 of the Italian Air Force, for subsequent hospitalization at the Agostino Gemelli University Polyclinic in Rome. For the ambulance flight, a crew and an aircraft from the 31st Wing in Ciampino were used. The urgent flight, requested by the Prefecture of Catania, was immediately arranged and coordinated by the top-level operations center of the Air Force Command.
