Raffadali murder: Santa Elisabetta defendant sentenced to life

The Court of Assizes of Agrigento, chaired by Wilma Angela Mazzara, sentenced forty-six-year-old Roberto Lampasona from Santa Elisabetta to life imprisonment, accused of being one of the material authors of the murder of retired Pasquale Mangione from Raffadali, a former municipal employee, who was shot dead and hit in the head with the butt of a gun on December 2, 2011, in his country house in Contrada Modaccamo.

The judges accepted the request of the prosecutor Sara Varazi at the conclusion of the trial, in which Lampasona was the only defendant because the other two accused chose the fast-track trial.

Antonino Mangione, who confessed to organizing the murder and implicated one of the victim’s sons, was the one to reveal the background of the incident. Initially investigated as the instigator before being cleared, Lampasona and D’Antona were the ones accused of committing the murder, according to Antonino Mangione’s account. The collaborator had added, “I asked Francesco Fragapane for permission (convicted of being the new boss of the mob) who told me that the victim was not part of Cosa Nostra, and ultimately, we could do as we pleased.”

The family line of inquiry was shelved, so much so that the prosecution requested the dismissal of the victim’s son (ratified by the judge) and brought only Antonino Mangione, D’Antona, and Lampasona to trial. The first two were sentenced in the fast-track trial (16 years for D’Antona, 10 years for Mangione). Lampasona’s defense lawyers, Antonino Gaziano and Salvatore Manganello, had requested acquittal, arguing that Antonino Mangione’s accusations were the result of personal animosity and were aimed at deflecting suspicions from a family member.
