Protests for April 25th: Singing “Bella Ciao” not allowed in Pantelleria

The Anpi of Pantelleria “expresses deep concern and indignation for the decision of the municipal administration to censor the Italian Resistance anthem, Bella Ciao, for the celebrations of April 25, Liberation Day.” “Without any official explanation, the municipal administration has denied the inclusion of Bella Ciao in the lineup of celebrations, opting to limit itself to the execution of the national anthem – protests the Anpi – This decision is incomprehensible and represents a serious affront to shared historical memory and the values of the Resistance.” The association of partisans raised the issue on two occasions with the administration, “seeking to mediate the situation and ensure respect for the traditions and symbols of the Resistance.”

“However, despite attempts at dialogue, the municipal administration has proven to be ambiguous and unwilling to resolve the controversy in a satisfactory manner – the Anpi asserts – Bella Ciao is not just a song, but a symbol of hope, unity, and freedom for Italy and the entire world. During the Resistance, it became the anthem of the oppressed against oppressors, embodying the deepest values of democracy and the struggle for freedom. Its exclusion from the April 25 celebrations represents an attempt to erase a fundamental part of our national history and an offense to the memory of the partisans who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of our country.”

The Anpi of Pantelleria reaffirms “its commitment to defend the values of the Resistance and to promote the knowledge and dissemination of Bella Ciao as a precious heritage to protect and pass on to future generations.”
