Protest in Caccamo to honor Mico Geraci, labor unionist killed by the mafia

“Caccamo never forgets,” is the phrase chosen by the municipal administration of Caccamo, led by Franco Fiore, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the murder of Mico Geraci, a union leader killed by the mafia on the evening of October 8, 1998. The events will take place over two days, Sunday, October 8 and Monday, October 9, because, as the mayor emphasizes, “we believe it is essential to educate the new generations to build a future free from mafia influence, and to do so, it is necessary to educate them to respect the law, remembering the atrocities that this land has experienced in the past.” On Sunday, the mayor, along with the Sicilian Identity Assessor Francesco Paolo Scarpinato, representing the regional president Renato Schifani, will visit Mico Geraci’s grave to lay a wreath of flowers. A prayer will be said, and the mini mayor, Nicolò Sclafani, will represent the young people of Caccamo. This will be followed by a Mass. On Monday morning, students, teachers, and authorities will march through the streets of the town to remember Mico Geraci, who was killed by the mafia. The procession will move to Piazza Zafferana, the site of the murder, which will be renamed Mico Geraci Square, with the unveiling of a plaque. Various individuals, including Secretary-General Francesco Fragale representing the Metropolitan City and Monsignor Fabrizio Moscato representing the Archdiocesan Curia, will participate in the events organized by the Municipality of Caccamo. The 25th anniversary of the murder will also be commemorated at the Regional Assembly of Sicily, with the participation of representatives from the local government of Caccamo.
