Program for a tent city in Lampedusa: revolt erupts with road blockade

A hundred residents of Lampedusa, led by Deputy Mayor Attilio Lucia (Lega), blocked Via Vittorio Emanuele at the intersection with Via Ariosto. Traffic towards the town hall was disrupted, with several cars and even a crane lined up. The protest erupted when news spread among the islanders that a tent camp will be created in the former military base of Loran, and that the army’s equipment will be on the ferry about to arrive at the port. The protesters expressed their opposition to more reception centers and tent camps, saying that Lampedusa cannot accommodate all these people. They demanded that the government provide two ships offshore and bypass the island. The demonstration was made up of elderly people, young individuals, and women with babies in their arms. They vowed to continue roadblocks and prevent the establishment of the tent camp. Organizers are deciding how to maintain the street blockade near the town hall. They urged residents to call their relatives and friends, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation and the need to save their island.
