Police in Palermo intercept trafficking of Egyptian men.
The State Police of Palermo carried out a arrest of a suspect issued by the Antimafia District Directorate for aiding and abetting illegal immigration. The police officers from the Mobile Squads of Palermo and Agrigento, as well as the Central Operations Service, arrested an Egyptian in Milan accused, along with other unidentified suspects, of participating in a criminal association aimed at aiding illegal immigration, in an aggravated form. The restrictive measure was taken as part of the investigations into a transnational criminal group involved in the trafficking of migrants, mostly of Egyptian nationality, with the operational support of some traffickers in Libya who manage safe houses where migrants are held, tortured, and destined to be transferred to Italian coasts after paying a sum.
In this context, the responsibilities of the suspect emerged, who allegedly organized illegal movements of his compatriots, who left Egypt and arrived in Lampedusa since 2022. It also emerged that the cost of a single trip to Italy would amount to around 11 thousand euros, a price that could be discounted due to the suspect’s friendship. The arrest took place simultaneously with an operation conducted in the Lombard capital and coordinated by the Antimafia District Directorate of Milan against another ten Egyptians, deemed responsible for the same crimes, in relation to the results of a parallel investigative activity initiated on a criminal group operating in the Milanese hinterland, managing the transfers of Egyptians arriving in Europe.
