Police action in Palermo uncovers fake son’s accident scam, returns money and gold to elderly victim.
The Palermo State Police returned yesterday, April 16, the stolen goods taken from an elderly victim of fraud by two men from Campania, who were reported to the authorities. The 83-year-old lady was contacted by phone by a fake carabiniere, who told her that her son had been involved in a serious car accident in which he had hit two people, one of whom had died. For this reason, according to the fake military’s story, the son had been arrested in the secure rooms of the Civico Hospital in Palermo and money was needed to pay the bail and release him. The elderly woman had thus collected about 700 euros that she had at home and gold items. Shortly after, the doorbell rang and a man presented himself as the judge’s representative to take the money and gold jewelry. Of course, it was all a lie. Thanks to the images from the surveillance systems, the Mobile Squad agents managed to trace the two men from Campania who were stopped aboard the ship bound for Naples by the border police.
