Pedara woman finds the strength to report and arrest abusive husband after 29 years
In Pedara, the carabinieri, on the orders of the Etna Public Prosecutor’s Office, arrested a 55-year-old man who had been abusing his wife and children for 29 years. The man, an electrician, was placed under house arrest in a different residence from the family home and with an electronic bracelet. The wife reported him, finding the courage after years of continuous abuse that escalated to physical and verbal violence, including death threats with switchblades and throwing furniture and ornaments at the children, even when they were minors.
The man allegedly has problems with alcoholism and exhibited violent behavior towards the children, whom he would also attack in the presence of friends or other relatives, threatening them, “I’ll kill you and leave you where you are.” On one occasion, about 5 years ago, the man reportedly broke his wife’s arm with a stick, then took her to the emergency room and forced her to say she had fallen. He often slapped and punched his wife, causing bruises and injuries noticed by people who regularly saw the family, providing the carabinieri with precise and consistent statements regarding the episodes of violence.
The man’s behavior led his wife to sleep on the couch for the past two years fearing that he might harm her during the night. The couple’s daughter, now an adult, also told the carabinieri that she had been a victim of abuse by her father, who always tried to mistreat her for trivial reasons and, failing to hit her, would throw objects at her found in the house.
