Partial reopening of Palermo’s English Garden: asphalt removed from paths and statues cleaned.

The English Garden of Palermo reopens. In part. The first works have been completed and so the side facing Via Libertà is once again accessible. Just in time for the traditional gathering for Liberation Day (tomorrow, April 25).

“We are doing this in the presence of schools – emphasized Mayor Roberto Lagalla – in a redeveloped environment both in terms of plant regeneration, safety, and respect for conservative architecture. We have removed the horrible asphalt from the avenues – continued the mayor -, restored the porphyry. The borders of the flower beds have been redone and we have eliminated the tripping hazards caused by emerging roots. We have cleaned up the statuary heritage.”

The green area has been closed since last February for restoration and enhancement works made possible thanks to the funds obtained from the Pnrr (2.5 million euros). The day was colored by the students of the Catalano art high school, exhibiting some of their paintings and drawings along the avenues.

The scene was contested by the winning float of the last edition of the Educarnival: created by the students of the Artistic high school, the work, which impressed the mayor and the Green councilor, Pietro Alongi so much that they wanted to give it a role in one of the many initiatives of the upcoming 400th Festino, represents Santa Rosalia surrounded by traditional roses.

“It is no coincidence – emphasized Alongi – that there are students from the art high school: here will also become a fab-lab (experimental laboratory) where there will be culture, environment, greenery, and everything will be combined together.” And he continues: “In this first reopened area, we have done a substantial and important work, even if invisible in some ways. The lighting system is ready and in the coming days, the poles will be placed – emphasized the councilor – the irrigation system has been redone, necessary to guarantee the lawn, and the tree roots have been relieved of suffering, removing about 50 centimeters of concrete.”

To fully understand the work, it will be necessary to wait for everything to be completed, “by the end of the year – Lagalla explained – meanwhile, we have delivered the first installment to the city, even if we have to admit with a few days of delay but nothing to do with what we were unfortunately used to. The gardens must be available to the Palermitans and their best expressive forms, nothing will prevent even the gardens from entering into an artistic and multi-thematic commitment.”
