Palermo’s Piazza Politeama station to be inaugurated in a few months.

The European Commissioner for Cohesion, Elisa Ferreira, along with the regional councillor for Infrastructure, Alessandro Aricò, and the mayor of Palermo, Roberto Lagalla, have committed to inaugurating one of the city’s long-awaited projects: the main stop on the railway ring, known as Politeama. This project is being funded by European funds, and the European Commissioner visited the construction site to oversee progress. Lagalla stated that the lower part of the ring, which passes through the port and reaches the city center, should be ready by 2024, which will greatly simplify public transportation and alleviate traffic congestion. Aricò emphasized that the Politeama stop is crucial for the city and eagerly anticipated by residents and commuters as it will provide quick access to the city center. The project has a total investment of around €180 million, with €45 million financed by the region and the rest covered by European funds. The works are expected to be completed by 2023, with the opening scheduled for 2024. Schifani, a government spokesperson, mentioned that the Schifani administration is working closely with Trenitalia and RFI to enhance mobility in the city and region using train services. Schifani also outlined the region’s plans to utilize the new European funds, stating that in the next programming cycle (2021-2027), Sicily will have access to €12 billion in EU and Development and Cohesion Fund funds. The region will focus on tackling key challenges such as waste management, water, and transportation. The video includes a statement from Aricò and images of the new station.
