Palermo’s Castle by the Sea: Cleanup Operation Begins on Red-Painted Walls

The restoration work has begun to clean the 18th-century walls of the monumental area of the seaside castle. Shortly after the inauguration of the newly revitalized area near Marina Yachting, a large red inscription appeared. The photo, taken by a citizen, spread on social media and caused deep outrage, especially after another act of vandalism was recorded on the trapezoidal pier, where a large heart was spray-painted on the facade of a local establishment. The inscription “M+L, sott’e stelle” is believed to be a quote from a neomelodic singer’s song. The Port Authority reported the vandalism to the carabinieri, who have initiated an investigation to identify the culprits. The surveillance camera footage has been examined as well. The restoration of the site is being undertaken by the Municipal Superintendent, as the inscription is on the sandstone walls and must be delicately removed by expert hands.
